New Zealand King Salmon champions a culture of growth

Tama Tauwhare began his career with New Zealand King Salmon (NZKS) 15 years ago. From starting on the factory floor, he has grown his skills and now holds a leadership position as their hygiene manager.

Cleaning is one of the major weapons in the battle to maintain high food safety standards – and Tama is the leader of NZKS’s hygiene army.

He leads a team of 11 and they have the critical responsibility of maintaining factory hygiene.

“Given we are in the food sector, food safety is one of our top priorities, so maintaining high factory hygiene standards is essential,” says Tama.

“A clean environment sets the platform for a safe shelf life of our products.

“I started on the processing line, moved up to charge hand, and was recently appointed hygiene manager last year.”

What Tama loves most about his mahi is being able to “pull the best out of people”. Tama has been growing his team, and making sure they know how valuable and essential they are to the company’s operations.

Tama reckons NZKS is a compassionate, loyal and supportive employer – and to those who are willing to put themselves forward, there is plenty of room to grow into other areas and roles.

New Zealand King Salmon is passionate about growing its people, and always looks for opportunities to offer further training and growth pathways. They have recently launched their refreshed NMIT/Te Pūkenga aquaculture scholarships. For more details, visit www.nmit.ac.nz/study/apply/fees-costs-and-financing/scholarships
